Phoenix originated in 1866 as a Hay Camp to supply Camp McDowell, which was established by the United States Cavalry in 1865. Phoenix was incorporated as a city in 1881. Geographically, Phoenix covers 470 square miles; its current population is more than 1.3 million.
Arizona became the 48th state on February 14, 1912. More than 1,700 Betas call Arizona home.
